A recital of this quality by Sol Gabetta and Kris Bezuidenhout will make for a wonderful contrast to this season’s orchestral concerts. The choice of German Romantic music gives both artists the opportunity to unlock their full potential. Robert Schumann’s Fantasy pieces are the definition of musical poetry, and then comes his spiritual son, Johannes Brahms, whose second cello sonata in F major was an extension of his predecessor’s art. Felix Mendelssohn was dubbed the «Mozart of the 19th century» – a title he richly deserved. Much like the Austrian genius, Mendelssohn was also able to combine unbelievable lightness with poetic depth. His sonata No. 2 in D major expresses both the beauty and the ephemeral nature of life. Internationally feted star cellist Sol Gabetta originally hails from Argentina but has long been a resident of Switzerland, which she uses as a base for her performances. Kristian Bezuidenhout meanwhile has built up an impressive global fanbase for his delicate keyboard artistry, particularly in London which has become a focus for his musical endeavours. His versatility enables him to express all the nuances of the sounds of chamber music on modern concert pianos as well as ancient fortepianos.
